MRE's Meals Ready To Eat
MRE's are meals that are ready to eat. Yep, when you in a pinch and there is no place to get take out or if you haven't had any luck catching anything or trapping anything, you can always rely on your stash of MRE's. You did pack some MRE's didn't you? Or we're going to have to eat that bark off the tree. MRE's are meals that have been freeze dried or packaged to provide the minimum calories to exist in most situations which is about 1200 calories per meal. Once you open an MRE it can last about 21 days before, although unopened, they have a shelf life of about 3 years if kept between minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit(for a short period) and a maximum of 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
The average 1200 calorie MRE weighs in about 13 to 18 ounces depending on the menu choice and the water contained within the individual meal. In the photo above is an individual MRE of Roast Beef with vegetables, candy for desert, bread, a buttery spread, peanut butter and jelly, a powder mix like a sports drink, a plastic spoon as the only utensil, a flame less heater to warm your MRE, a package of water resistant matches, a towelette, salt, pepper, sugar, creamer, hot sauce, chewing gum and a napkin that doubles as toilet paper.
The only thing left to wonder about is what to do with the outer brown wrapping that comes with the MRE. I use the brown outer wrapping as a trash can of sorts, because at 240 lbs, I can eat two MRE's at one sitting, providing of course, I haven't bagged anything that is edible that day. That doesn't happen too often, but when it does, it sure is nice to have something to look forward to eat. I have a love or hate relationship with packaged foods, but I have to tell you, it sure beats lugging around 30 to 40 pounds of cooking gear and food items when you are in the field, mountains or jungle and your only mode of transportation are your feet! If you need MRE's for your next adventure, just click on the title to this posting and it will take you to where we buy our MRE's. Bon Appetit!
